Scientists from the United States-based Monell Center have reported odor sensors in the nose are also present in human taste cells found on the tongue.

The discoveries submit that Communications between the senses of smell and taste may commence on the tongue and not in the brain.

The study was prompted after a researcher’s 12-year-old son asked if snakes stick out their tongues to smell.

Mehmet Hakan Ozdener, a Cell biologist at Monell said, “our research may help explain how odor molecules modulate taste perception.”

He also said, “this may lead to the development of odor-based taste modifiers that can help combat the excess salt, sugar, and fat intake associated with diet-related diseases such as obesity and diabetes.”
